Your master bedroom is one of the most used rooms in your home – it’s where you start your day, unwind with a book in the evening and get a good night’s sleep. It’s a space to reset and relax, and being intentional about its energy is a good place to begin. Keep scrolling for an easy-to-follow formula for setting up the perfect master bedroom.

A stylishly decorated bedroom featuring a Soho Home Belsa bed with a deep blue velvet headboard and footboard, and a wooden frame. The bed is dressed with white linens, a textured cream-colored throw, and several decorative pillows in brown and patterned fabrics. Two wooden nightstands with brass accents flank the bed, each topped with a pleated peach-toned lamp. Above the bed hangs a large, multi-tiered chandelier with a textured glass or shell-like appearance. A large abstract painting with muted tones of beige, blue, black, and orange hangs on the wall above the headboard. To the right, a white fireplace mantel with a dark opening and a round mirror above it is visible. The room has light beige walls and a patterned rug in shades of blue, beige, and brown covers the wooden floor. Natural light enters from a window on the left, partially obscured by a light-colored curtain. The overall aesthetic is luxurious and contemporary with a touch of vintage charm

Choose your style

Before you begin sourcing decor and furniture, figure out what design style you gravitate towards. We always recommend creating a Pinterest board with inspiration, so you can see everything put together in one place.

Select the right size bed for you (and your space)

Having a large bed is great, but it’s no fun to climb over your partner to get into your spot. As a general rule of thumb, having three feet on either side of your bed gives you plenty of space for nightstands and to easily make the bed.

Cut the clutter

No matter the size of your master bedroom, there are simple clutter-hiding solutions that will keep your space tidy. Bedskirts conceal under-the-bed bins, nightstands with drawers make it easy to tuck away bedside essentials and small trays/baskets on dressers serve as catch-alls for smaller items.

Create balance

Bedrooms lend themselves well to symmetry, and balance can easily be achieved by using the bed as the focal point. Place nightstands on either side with matching lamps and balance them with similar decor, like picture frames, small plants and candles. Add matching (or coordinating) sets of pillows, and hang similar artwork above each nightstand.

Don’t skip functional decor

Decorating your master bedroom is the fun part, but don’t add decor without a plan. Is your bedroom where you get ready in the morning? Place a mirror above your dresser. Are your hardwood floors too cool in the morning? Stay warm with an area rug (and use our guide to make sure it’s the right size!)

Invest in quality bedding

There’s no denying that quality bedding looks better, but they also can improve your overall quality of sleep. Natural fabrics are soft and breathable, unlike their synthetic counterparts. You’ll likely also get a better night’s rest if you’re comfortable!

Consider a color scheme

Similar to deciding on your design style, selecting the right color scheme is essential in creating a restful, relaxing space. Color really does set the tone for the overall mood, so it’s important to get it right. Try out these five color combinations for maximum serenity (link to color palettes)
